DRILL OF THE WEEK - DECEMBER 1, 2011

Slice BH CC Deep + Short Angle + DL Mix, by Rafael Font de Mora

Objective: Develop the correct technique and variety in your slice backhand mixing depth, angle and direction.

Description: The slice backhand has lost a lot of emphasis in today's power game. I am a firm believer that this is a shot that every junior who wants to become a complete player should learn it not only to improve their defensive game, but also to add a new dimension and variety to their game.

This particular drill will help you develop 3 options in your slice backhand:
1 - The deep crosscourt
2 - The short crosscourt angle
3 - The deep down the line

The most important element of having a good slice backhand is to keep the ball low so your opponent is forced to hit the ball up so you can set up an aggressive shot. By slowing the ball down, it also gives you extra time to get back into the point when you are out of position. Lastly, this change of pace and height makes it a great tool to exploit your opponent's weakness. Most players at all levels love powerful shots but the slow, low balls and change of pace drives them crazy.

Do not underestimate the use of the slice backhand, especially the short crosscourt angle. This is a formidable shot that will get your opponent out of position so you have the court open for your next shot. Use it both defensively and offensively, and you will be gladly surprised of the results you will achieve. Once you have perfected this shot, it will be easy to add and disguise your drop shot from the backhand side, which requires the same technique and feel of the slice backhand.

This week we are releasing in the Training Drill Library the different patterns you can use with your slice backhand. We hope you enjoy them!
